Winter Fuel Payment Opt-Out Deadlines

September 15, 2026by ghanchi2000

Winter Fuel Payment deadlines are coming up.

If you’re a pensioner who’d rather not receive the Winter Fuel Payment for winter 2026/27, the opt-out deadlines are almost here. Payments go out automatically by default, so if you’d prefer to skip it rather than have it clawed back later through your tax, now’s the time to act.

This matters most if you expect your total income to exceed £35,000 in the 2026/27 tax year — HMRC will recover the full payment from anyone who exceeds that threshold.

Why bother opting out?

The Winter Fuel Payment is meant to help pensioners cover heating costs. But if you earn over £35,000, getting the payment doesn’t mean you actually get to keep it.

HMRC will typically claw it back through your tax — either by tweaking your PAYE tax code or via your Self Assessment return, depending on your situation. For some people, it’s just easier to opt out up front than to receive the money and hand it back later.

The key dates

The deadline depends on how you opt out, and where you live.

England, Wales and Northern Ireland:

  • Ringing the Winter Fuel Payment helpline — by 6 pm on 18 September 2026
  • Opting out online or by form — by 11:59 pm on 20 September 2026

Scotland works differently, since the equivalent is the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment. There, the online opt-out deadline is midday on 19 October 2026.

Not sure which rules apply to you? The official GOV.UK Winter Fuel Payment guidance has the latest details on eligibility and payments.

What if you don’t opt out?

If you’re eligible and don’t opt out, you’ll get the payment automatically as usual. If your income is over £35,000, HMRC will then recover it through your tax.

If you file Self Assessment, you’ll need to include the payment on your return. If not, HMRC will likely adjust your tax code to collect it.

Payments should start going out from November 2026, with most people seeing theirs in November or December.

Can you change your mind later?

Yes — opting out isn’t permanent. If you decide you do want the payment for winter 2026/27 after all, you can opt back in up until 31 March 2027. And once you’ve opted out, you don’t need to keep doing it every year — it only resets if you opt back in.

Need help figuring out where you stand?

The rules around this payment can get tricky, especially if you’ve got income from multiple sources or file Self – Assessment. It’s worth understanding how the payment fits into your overall tax picture before the deadline hits.
