UK Tax Burden Expected to Reach Historic High by 2030

March 16, 2026by Admin

The UK’s overall tax burden is projected to rise significantly over the coming years, with forecasts suggesting it could reach around £1.4 trillion annually by the 2030/31 tax year. This would represent approximately 38.5% of the country’s GDP, marking one of the highest levels of taxation in modern UK history.

One of the key drivers behind this increase is the continued freeze on income tax thresholds. As wages rise over time, more taxpayers are expected to move into higher tax brackets, a process commonly known as “fiscal drag.” The policy is estimated to generate around £67 billion in additional revenue for the Treasury.

Economic experts have raised concerns that the rising tax burden may place pressure on businesses and individuals. Higher employment costs, increased taxation, and policy uncertainty could potentially slow economic growth and impact business confidence.

For individuals and businesses alike, careful tax planning and professional accounting advice will become increasingly important to manage liabilities effectively as tax pressures rise.
